The town of Cap-Chat / The Capucins
Cap-Chat town profile
The western gateway to the RMC of Haute-Gaspésie is where you will find Cap-Chat. The town is welcoming and will expose you to its beauty through a tempestuous nature that will please even the most demanding visitors.
From the first moment the Baie des Capucins salted marsh will thrill any amateur ornithologist with the immense array of animal and plant life which find refuge in its waters.
It is also from this viewpoint that Le Nordais, the first wind farm in Gaspésie consisting of 76 wind turbines, is most impressive due to the sight of the world's highest vertical axis turbine.
Continuing on the road, you will discover the Rocher Cap-Chat, a tourist attraction featuring a suspended trail from tree to tree through the park, a lighthouse and a vibrant garden situated on a cape overlooking the majestic Saint Lawrence Seaway.
Shortly after passing a church constructed in a Romanic-style, you will cross the salmon-filled Cap-Chat River, shared by RMC fishermen, and kayak and canoe enthusiasts. You can discover the back country with an available all-terrain vehicle (ATV) rental, and even kayak near the municipal rest stop situated at the junction of the Cap-Chat and the Saint Lawrence Rivers.
From this location, you have access to one of the most beautiful sandy beaches of Gaspésie, as well as an eye-popping view of the massive Chic-Chocs Mountains. Furthermore, a nearby outdoor recreational area accommodating a ski centre, a slide and an outdoor ice rink are accessible by the rue des Fonds for the winter sports lover. Route 5 (a snowmobile path) also crosses the back country.
Services including a cultural committee, a youth club, a municipal library as well as various social and leisure activity groups are also present.
Cap-Chat also has the access road to an all-season Tourist Attraction, the Relais Chic-Chocs St-Octave Inc., as well as in the new Chic-Chocs Mountains Lodge of the Société des établissements de plein air du Québec (Sépaq).
