Non-Organized Territories profile

Distinguished by its natural beauty, the N-OT contains some of Quebec's most amazing locales. Mostly forested, the setting also hosts well known and impressive mountains including Mont Jacques Cartier (at 1314 m), Mont Richardson (1 295 m) and Mont Albert (1 200m) which are fundamental parts of the Parc de la Gaspésie and the Réserve faunique des Chic-Chocs (wildlife reserve), major tourist attractions of the territory.

Outside the Parc de la Gaspésie and Réserve faunique des Chic-Chocs limits, there is the omnipresence of industrial forestry exploitation. Also found are old parishes built during the time of the original colonies, such as St-Bernard-des-lacs and St-Octave-de-l'Avenir, which were closed at the beginning of the nineteen-seventies.

Nowadays, some age-old buildings (i.e.: church, rectory) bear witness to the passage of the pioneers in the region of St-Octave-de-l'Avenir. After the closure of the colony, the site served for many years as a summer camp for National Defence Corps cadets. A holiday resort village was also developed in the region (inn and chalets).


Permanent Population :

Established in January 1986, the N-OT of Mont-Albert includes 222 inhabitants (2001 census). The populated sectors are situated along Route 299, the sector commonly known as Cap-Seize and along the route St-Joseph-des-Monts. As for the N-OT Coulée des Adolphes, there are no inhabitants. The Parc de la Gaspésie and the Réserve faunique des Chic-Chocs sectors are inhabited based on tourism.

Area :

The RMC of Haute-Gaspésie covers a region of 5126.8 km², among which about 3 600 km² are located within the Non-Organized Territories, a name indicating that these territories do not make up a part of any local municipality. Governed by the municipal Code, the RMC acts as the local municipally in regards to the N-OT Mont-Albert and Coulée des Adolphes..
