Name Change
In November 1999, the Council of the RMC mayors asked the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and the Metropolitan Area (ministère des Affaires municipales et de la Métropole) to modify the name of the RMC. In an attempt represent the territory more effectively; a new name for the RMC was needed to reflect the character of the area, including having the highest mountain ranges in Québec (Monts Jacques Cartier, Richardson, Albert, etc), the St-Laurence Seaway and the many tourist attractions within the territory.
"Haute-Gaspésie" was retained to be the new name of the RMC.
As a result, the Minister responsible for Municipal Affairs and the Metropolitan Area, Mrs. Louise Harel, approved the renaming, as published in the Official Gazette of Québec on May 27, 2000.
